Wood Patio Furniture: Easy Ways to Make It Last a Lifetime
If you’ve chosen wood patio furniture for your outdoor living space, you may be concerned about caring for your investment. Wood furniture is a great choice, even for areas exposed to the elements, as long as you care for it properly.
You have many choices in your finishes for your wood patio furniture. Many people choose not to finish their wood patio furniture at all, allowing it to weather naturally; while others use stains to give their furniture a classic look. Still others paint their outdoor wood furniture. If you want to keep your painted or finished outdoor furniture looking new, you’ll need to refinish or repaint it every two to three years, depending upon how much sun, cold and water it’s exposed too.
Regardless of your choice in finishes, your wood patio furniture needs good regular cleaning. Cleaning yearly with a pressure washer, along with regular milder soap and water cleaning should do the trick. Clean spills up as they happen to avoid water rings and stains.
You’ll also likely want to use some sort of protector on your wood patio furniture. There are many types available, in both water and oil bases. Water based products are easier to work with and easier to clean up, but oil based protectors will provide a longer lasting finish. If you live in an area that’s extremely wet, look for a protector with a mold inhibitor. If your summers are very hot, look for a product with a UV protector.
If you live in an area where winters are very cold, it is best to store your furniture indoors, if you have the space. If this isn’t an option, then using the protectors I mentioned above is even more important.
Beautiful wood patio furniture is a great investment for your home. Be sure to invest a little time and energy in your furniture’s maintenance, to ensure that it serves you well for many years to come.
